Isn’t this the most non-Egyptian, Egyptian thing you’ve ever seen?  Well, this is Bes. protector of childbirth, prego women, and the actual  birth itself. He fended off the bad guys with his ugly face, loud music,  and dancing…and the ladies loved him.
He also got around a lot.  As early as around 2000 BC images have him started to spring up all  around the Eastern Mediterranean, even into Rome and Persepolis.
Anywho, I love this quote:  “One of the most attractive among the divine beings worshiped by the ancient Egyptians was the little household god Bes, who with his varied postures and activities and his jovial ugliness stands in marked contrast to the stately divinities of the official pantheon” (Cartwright).
